Help the Planet With Used Cell Phones

Almost everyone now owns a cell phone, which makes it incredibly easy to reach just about anyone, anytime, for any reason. Cell phones are great tools, especially for business or in emergencies, but because they are so widely used, they can create a lot of strain on the environment. Many time, when a consumer is finished with a cell phone, it simply gets thrown out, especially if it's broken. As the average consumer goes through one cell phone a year, with some individuals going through as many a five cell phones a year, this can add up to quite a bit of trash that doesn't have to happen.

More and more people are becoming aware that electronics need to be disposed of in a special manner, and cell phones are no exception. If they are sent to landfills with the rest of our trash, they don't decompose because the materials used to make cell phones are not biodegradable. They also can't be burned or incinerated because the chemicals used in screens and batteries are toxic to the atmosphere when they are burned. As a result, a big problem about what to do with all these cell phones has arisen. In response, mobile companies have begun collecting used cell phones, sometimes offering incentives to consumers who return their old phone when they buy a new one. Most of these phones are kept by the mobile companies, cleaned, and restored and sold at discounted prices as refurbished cell phones.

Purchasing used cell phones is a great way to help this problem. The additional benefit is that they are cheaper than new phones but have the same functionality. If we could take only half of the phones that are thrown away and instead refurbish them and resell them, we can significantly reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills each year. In other words, buying a used or refurbished cell phone is green in two senses - it saves the money and saves the environment.

You can also return your used cell phones to be refurbished when you're finished with them. It's as simple as taking them back to your mobile provider, and they'll handle the rest. Often times, you can get an additional discount for returning your old phones, which you can apply to the purchase of another used cell phone to continue the cycle. It's a simple, easy, and affordable way to help cut down on the trash we accumulate every year.

Last but not least, purchasing used cell phones results in less new phones that are bought and used. If enough people begin to understand the impact that purchasing used cell phones can have - both financially and environmentally - then we could force manufacturers to cut back on the number of phones they produce - which will translate to less pollution in all phases of a phone's life. So, if you're an AT&T customer, switch to used AT&T cell phones, save some money, and help preserve our planet!
